A Question of Quality

Posted on October 11th, 2011

There is a book trend steadily gaining traction, and it all has to do with this photo…

Can you guess what it is? It is the return to high quality designer hardcovers. Paperbacks, though cheaper and easier to carry, have eroded this market over time and the result is that the “look” has deteriorated. But with the nostalgic return to all things retro, it is very encouraging to see that many children’s classics are being reissued with lovely decorative cloth or mock cloth covers. It is interesting to ponder how this outside trend might affect the insides of books too. Will publishers develop lists for modern classics (Puffin already has one in fact), or look to commission more traditional nursery-style stories?
