Publishing Adventures in China

Last week I was in Beijing for StoryDrive China 2012. Here is a photo of me mid-sentence.
That spotlight was really bright. Anyway, there were people from film, books, gaming and advertising, as well as writers, directors and entertainment lawyers. We talked a lot about content, monetisation, choosing partners, and the heart of every media deliberation: the story. No matter how tricky you get with crossmedia and transmedia, it all comes back to story. In particular, depth of characterisation and narrative are key traits for additionality.
Do you think your story could be unfolded over several different platforms? A bit online, a bit in a book, a bit in a game? It’s definitely a different skill, and one which Smart Quill is going to explore with the new Digital Direction service. Coming soon…
In the meantime, suffice to say that China is utterly thrilling and exhausting and demanding and rewarding. They want to be a “cultural powerhouse”. Judging by the people I met there, they are right on track.
