Christmas R and R
Posted on December 30th, 2013
Where R and R stands for Reading and Relaxation. I was so depressed by W H Smiths at the airport last time I flew (unable to find a single book that I wanted to buy…), so this holiday I got organised. Here is what a I bought, and here is what I thought:
1. The Fountainhead by Ann Rynd – wow. Controversial, unflinching, powerful, and at times, disturbing. But millions of readers have upheld its bestselling status, and it is a thrilling piece of philosophical fiction about artistic integrity and objectivism.
2. Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis – I had to get to the end of this book in order to appreciate it. The humour is quite dark, and dated, but the mock-heroic tone wins out. I found myself oddly fond of the ill-fated protagonist, Jim Dixon.
3. Heartburn by Nora Ephron – the subject of my next book club! Wait and see…
