Smart Quill Editorial About the Editor

Christmas Crackers

Posted on December 19th, 2014

As 2014 draws to a close, I am delighted to announce several recent deals for Smart Quill authors. First up, a foray into non-fiction… Christophe Galfard has a PhD in theoretical physics from Cambridge University, where he was Professor Stephen Hawking’s graduate student. He has written four YA novels about science, and was co-author with Stephen Hawking and his daughter on their first YA novel, George’s Secret Key to the Universe.

Last year he wrote a brilliant and accessible proposal for a book based on the centenary of the theory of general relativity. Now, I know not much about science, but Christophe’s anecdotal style was so easy and charming.  Anthony Topping at Green & Heaton snapped it up, and then so did Macmillan in both the UK and the US. The book is called The Universe in Your Hand.

Next, a middle grade fantasy trilogy by Gabrielle Kent. Gabrielle has a stellar background in gaming, and is a regular judge on the BAFTA Games awards. On three occasions she has been listed as one of the Top 100 women in the games industry. At Frankfurt Book Fair last year I wandered past the Scholastic stand and was delighted to see Alfie Bloom: The Secrets of Hexbridge Castle, Gabrielle’s first book, front and centre as a super lead for 2015. Big stuff for a debut!

Congratulations to both Christophe and Gabrielle.
